Truly a first.
We planted this church five years ago. This is our first true ‘capital campaign.’ I’ll be honest, the thought terrifies me. From day one we’ve had a simple statement that defines us, “Real people serving a real God.” This has always been about authenticity. And let’s face it, historically, capital campaigns don’t exactly ooze authenticity. I don’t like gimmicks…and I hate begging for money. We’ve gotten a lot of mileage over the years making fun of thermometers on stages, if you recall!
However, in spite of my already admitted trepidation, at the same time, I’m pretty excited about all of this! Seriously. Here’s why:
- I know that this is God’s idea.
- I know that we won’t be cheeseball or gimmicky.
- I know that this move is a HUGE opportunity for us.
- I know that we’re getting a great deal.
- And…
…most of all, I know the people in our church. I know that we are generous. I know that we are Kingdom people. I know that we will give the way that God leads us to give, because we know, believe, and apply 2 Cor. 9:6-7,
6 The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
We are cheerful givers. We don’t respond to coaxing or begging, we respond to the leadership of the Lord. So, I can put 2 & 2 together: if this is God’s deal (and I know that it is), and we’re obedient to his leading (and I know that we will be), then this is going to work! And, let me tell you, this is a great opportunity!
